Finance Ministry Explains Oil Marketers’ Demands

The
 Ministry of Finance has reacted to the claim by the oil marketers 
association that it is still being owed by the federal government. 
Reacting to the claim, the media aide to the Finance Minister, Mr 
Paul Nwabuiukwu, told Channels Television over the phone that the 
marketers are demanding the payment of 159billion naira which is foreign
 exchange deferential of the money owed.

Mr Nwabiukwu said that the government has insisted that the claim has
 to be verified by the ministry and the Central Bank of Nigeria because 
of the history of the marketers

He said Nigerians will not be happy with the government if such payment is made without verifications by the Finance Ministry.

The Executive Secretary of the Major Oil Marketers Association, Mr 
Obafemi Olawoore, had earlier told Channels Television that the 
union was only ‘demanding that the money marketers are owed should be 
paid’.

“It is not that we are not bringing in fuel. The problem is that we 
are not bringing enough and the reason we are not bringing enough is 
simple. If you pay 154 [billion Naira] out of out of 354 [billion Naira]
 you are left with 200 [billion Naira]. That is not up to 50 per cent.

“What we are saying is that we should make attempt to pay. Banks 
should agree to open their of lines of credit so that we can access 
funds and bring in more products while the government talks to us.

“As we speak, nobody is talking, so we do not know the thinking of 
anybody. There is no crime in asking for the money. They are owing us 
some money and we want the money,” Mr Olawoore said.

Olawoore added that three jetties controlled by the union in Apapa, 
Lagos State, were discharging fuel, but lack of fund has affected the 
importation of petroleum products.

India Woos Nigeria On Agro Production and Telecomunication

The
 Indian High Commissioner to Nigeria, says his country is gearing up to 
further enhance cooperation with Nigeria in the areas of agricultural 
science, agro production and telecommunications expansion. 
The High Commissioner, Mr A R Ghanshyam, gave the hint when he paid a visit to Kaduna State Governor, Muktar Yero on Saturday.

Mr Ghanshyam said that he was in Kaduna to woo the state to partner 
with his country in the areas of modern agricultural development and 
industrial renewal.

He said that the new government in India has identified Nigeria as 
one of the countries to partner with in terms of business relations, and
 expressed optimism that such partnership would enable Nigeria diversify
 its sources of revenue beyond oil.

According to him, the Nigerian government can reap huge benefit from 
Indian investors through such partnership, noting that India contributes
 a larger percentage of Nigeria’s manufacturing sector and is the 
highest employer of labour after government.

He explained that there is excellent potential for trade and 
investment cooperation between India and Nigeria in sectors like 
pharmaceuticals, agro production and telecommunication and agriculture.

In his response, Governor Yero lauded the Indian government for 
maintaining a close relationship with Nigeria and for choosing the 
country as one its economic hub.

Speaking to Channels Television shortly after the meeting, Governor 
Yero highlighted some of the successes recorded in the Agric sector 
under his administration, which include subsidizing fertilizer for 
farmers, revamping agric extension services and providing soft loans to 
farmers in the state.

 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Lynden Integrated Farms Limited 
for the establishment of a modern poultry production and processing farm
 in the state.

The Governor, during the occasion at the Governor’s Lodge, Amawbia in
 Awka, the Anambra State capital, emphasised that agriculture remains 
the number one pillar in his economic agenda for the state, revealing 
his determination to turn Anambra State into a model agricultural state. 

He stressed the plans to expand the agricultural landscape of the 
state, noting that he would want to change the trend whereby all day old
 chicks sold in the South are brought in from the West. 

Governor Obiano further expressed that he was planning towards 
establishing a favourable and sustainable environment for commercial 
agriculture to thrive in Anambra State more than any other state. 

The Chairman of Lynden Integrated Farms Limited led executive 
officers of the company to the Governor’s Lodge to seal the business 
contract with the state government. 

The Chairman, Mr Clem Nwogbo, while stating the benefits of the 
project, said that the project has the capacity to position Anambra 
State as the center of excellence in poultry farming in the south-east 
and south-south. 

He noted that this would be based on his company’s ability in 
developing a two-phased modern integrated poultry production and 
processing plan with day old chicks, and subsequently upgrading its 
facilities to provide high quality eggs from layers as well as fresh and
 frozen meat from broilers. 

The Chairman of Anambra State Investment Promotion and Protection 
Agency (ANSIPA), Mr Cyril Enwezor, gave the statistics of the equity 
ratio of the business which gives the investing company 90%, 6% for the 
state government and 4% for the host community. The company would also 
maintain a robust corporate social responsibility to the host community 
still. 

The proposed project would be located on seven hectares of land in 
Igbariam. It would generate 250 jobs during construction, 200 permanent 
jobs, as well as 2,000 indirect jobs subsequently.
